Fiction. Romance. Historical Fiction. HTML:NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY RT BOOK REVIEWS ? An ambitious beauty seeking a spot among the elite is thwarted by a most disruptive gentleman in Cecilia Grant??s witty, elegant, and exquisitely sensual novel.

Kate Westbrook has dreams far bigger than romance. Love won??t get her into London??s most consequential parties, nor prevent her sisters from being snubbed and looked down upon??all because their besotted father unadvisedly married an actress. But a noble husband for Kate would deliver a future most suited to the granddaughter of an earl. Armed with ingenuity, breathtaking beauty, and the help of an idle aunt with connections, Kate is poised to make her dreams come true. Unfortunately, a familiar face??albeit a maddeningly handsome one??appears bent on upsetting her scheme.

Implored by Kate??s worried father to fend off the rogues eager to exploit his daughter??s charms, Nick Blackshear has set aside the torch he??s carried for Kate in order to do right by his friend. Anyway, she made quite clear that his feelings were not returned??though policing her won??t abate Nick??s desire. Reckless passion leads to love??s awakening, but time is running out. Kate must see for herself that the charms of high society are nothing compared to the infinite sweet pleasures demanded by the heart.

??In the third of her Blackshear family series, Grant tackles class distinction and complex family dynamics in a wonderful sensual romance and witty tale in the style of Jane Austen . . . Grant skillfully takes a shallow, immature heroine and develops her into a likable, admirable grown woman. Grant is a smart, innovative, clever writer.???RT Book Reviews

??Wielding a deliciously sharp wit that even Jane Austen would envy, Grant delivers yet another cleverly conceived and deftly choreographed Regency historical that is both lushly sensual and thoroughly romantic. Readers who have yet to discover Grant??s impeccably written romances are in for a rare treat.???Booklist (starred review)

??Cecilia Grant is swiftly becoming one of my favorite historical romance authors, with her complex characters and thoughtful explorations of how their historical period shapes them. If you love multifaceted stories, definitely give her work a try!???Heroes and Heartbreakers

??The writing and characterization is every bit as good as I??ve come to expect, and Ms. Grant??s economic, restrained style works beautifully to allow the depth of emotion that bubbles under the surface throughout the story to speak for itself. I really liked and appreciated how very forthcoming Kate was about wanting to better her situation I'm glad that it seemed like there were real repercussions both from her parents' and from Nick's brother's "unsuitable" marriages (see [b: A Gentleman Undone|12769479|A Gentleman Undone (Blackshear Family, #2)|Cecilia Grant|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1321933178s/12769479.jpg|17913980] for the latter). I liked that the secondary and tertiary characters were so varied, never all judgmental or forgiving. I liked how Grant touched on how unfair it can be when children are paying for their parents mistakes, even in happy and loving families. I liked that Kate wasn't just about social aspirations, but also about healing the breach in her family. I loved how she was totally realistic about her looks and not falsely humble (I didn't love how uneven the text is about the way beauty is treated. Kate gets a little aggro about people not looking beyond her face, but her dad decided to marry her mom after seeing her on stage).

What I didn't like so much, and the reason it gets 3 stars, is the actual romance. It takes a long time for Kate to realize she digs Nick and I didn't think that it was adequately shown prior to her realization. Nick's feelings seemed more mature (after he got over his initial infatuation) but I didn't totally buy it from him either. Also, the sex parts were not convincing.

It's a bit of a shame because the story is so nuanced, but I felt the romance really lacked. ( )

First-rate writing, great characterization, good plot. Cecilia Grant is stretching the boundaries for a Regency romance, setting this tale among the barristers of London, with occasional forays into the upper crust and a brief visit lower. The moral of the story seems to be love triumphs over social class.
Female lead: Kate Westbrook, gorgeous, intelligent, and hoping to move up in the world
Male lead: Nick Blackshear, handsome, skilled barrister, with a scandal in his family
Setting: The middle-class household of the Westbrooks, the father is an experienced lawyer, with a thriving practice
Secondary characters: Some standouts, some not-so-finely sketched

A must-read if the setting appeals. ( )

I totally get that two people in a heated interaction can be both angry and attracted, maybe even especially so, but it never rings true for me the whole 'You're the worst! I'll show you, I'll kiss you! That'll really teach you a lesson!' thing. I'm sure it's trying to play with tension, most often they've never kissed before, angst maybe? =/ And it might be different if they both paused in the midst of their conflict, realizing they'd rather be doing something else besides arguing, and then started in. But forcing a hard, angry kiss on someone right when they're angriest with you just seems especially violating. It's probably legally assault or something. Let's maybe just retire this old cliche. Surely we've come far enough we can stop spinning 'forced sexual act as punishment' as desirable. ~Obviously romantic aggression is fine if both parties have agreed to it, consensual, it's whatever works for you! Fine story otherwise. ( )

Sweet, but the plot was not strong enough to prevent me from skipping some parts. It was lovely to see Nick and Will reconcile after their falling out in the previous book. ( )

So, I don't have much energy for a review, but saw that there were all kinds of them from friends, so I'll leave it at that unless I get inspired. ( )
