I love his incorporation of medicine and science to his Sci fi. There’s just enough information to keep you engaged but without boring the reader. The chapter length was also perfect for me. Not too long but each chapter with excellent story progression. ( ) Old science fiction novel which is also interesting as it transmits the feeling of another era (around 50 years ago). The action is placed in their immediate present and while it proposes advanced instruments/computers it can be a bit funny when you compare with what actually happened in 50 years. The story is about a germ of (potentially) extra-terrestrial origin, that causes some mayhem and that some scientist try to understand and cure. There are lots of descriptions of pieces of scientific knowledge (in biology, computers, etc.). The whole book is a bit written like a government report. The characters are rather flat and not very memorable. The action leading to the climax is enjoyable, but the resolution is quite anti-climatic. Fantastic glimpse into a what-if scenario about an alien pandemic that threatens to wipe out civilization if a small team of scientists don't stop it first. Well written examination of the scientific process. How it works, and where it breaks down. It's impressive to imagine that this book was written in the 1960's, but still feels so current. This was a timely read, considering the circumstances in the world (COVID-19), and while I suspect that helped engross me in the story - Crichton does a wonderful job all on his own illustrating an impending sense of urgency and dread.
