Throne of Glass is the first book in a seven-part series written by Sarah J. Maas.
As I already wrote in my review of The Assassin’s Blade, I already know the German translation of the series. But I would like to experience the book series in the English original now.

Opinion

In this first installment of the Throne of Glass series, we meet Celaena a year after what happened at the end of The Assassin’s Blade. As a slave, she works in the salt mines of Endovier, where she endured beatings and violence. Until Chaol Westphal, the Captain of the Guard, shows up and drags her before the Crown Prince of Adarlan, Dorian Havilliard. He makes her an unusual offer, which could ultimately give her back her freedom.
To get out of the misery of slave labor and with a view to her freedom, Celaena agrees to the terms and becomes the crown prince’s champion. Now the most notorious female assassin returns to Rifthold, where she will compete in a tournament to become the king’s champion, his personal assassin.

Sarah J. Maas gradually introduces Celaena’s individual opponents, and it quickly becomes clear that something is off about Cain. But the author cleverly interweaves small hints, which come into their own at the end of the story.
Also, the references to the unusual behavior of the King and Duke Perrington often made me think. And why did Kaltain, another pawn in court intrigue, keeps getting headaches and hearing a strange flapping of wings around Perrington? These puzzles will probably have to wait a while for their solution.
Because Celaena made it through to the last round of the tournament with diligence, a little cheating and a fighting spirit. But in the meantime she was able to win over two friends. Nehemiah is one of them and will be of great importance to her. The clarification of strange murder cases among the participants becomes a not unimportant part of her task, even if Chaol and Dorian notice nothing of Celaena’s nocturnal forays through the catacombs of the castle.

Maas makes it exciting until the end. She also mysteriously involved the appearance of Elena, an ancestor of Celaena. That leaves plenty of scope for more. The reference to the bow of the Goddess Diana also promises to be important for the further plot of the series.

Conclusion

Throne of Glass is epic, exciting and addictive! The hidden darkness that weaves together in the subplot promises to contain some secrets that will probably only be revealed gradually over the course of the entire series plot. The author’s fluent and engaging style of writing doesn’t let you put the book down. Her characters are expressive and vividly described. The world that stretches around the main protagonist is also captivating. Even after you’ve finished, you want to dive straight into the next volume, Crown of Midnight.

Da ich bereits Celaenas Vorgeschichte kannte, wusste ich auch, wie sie in den Schlamassel geraten ist, in dem ich wieder auf sie traf. Doch um überhaupt die Reihe in die Hand zu nehmen, hat es Jahre gedauert. Was auch ganz gut war, denn so konnte ich 2018 auch fast alle Bände auf einmal kaufen. Obwohl es dann noch bis 2020 gedauert hat, bis ich in die Welt von Erilea gereist bin.

Meinung

Celaena ist wohl eine der umstrittensten Charaktere des Fantasy – Genres. Ist sie die beste weibliche Hauptfigur, über die ich je gelesen habe? Ja und Nein.
Ja, weil sie für mich wohl die erste Protagonistin ist, die endlich mal auf den Putz gehauen hat. Nein, weil sie mir zu sehr einem Teenager-Mädchen ähnelt. Sie ist kleinlich, egozentrisch, arrogant, unentschlossen und hitzköpfig. Das macht sie nicht unbedingt sehr sympathisch, aber mit der Zeit wurde ich mit ihr warm. Während andere der Meinung sind, dass die Novellen über ihre Vorgeschichte erst später im Laufe der Reihe gelesen werden sollten, muss ich dem widersprechen. Denn mir haben sie geholfen, einige Zusammenhänge gleich zu Beginn der Reihe ins Licht zu rücken.

Ich habe oft gehört und gelesen, dass Celaena ihrem Ruf als beste Assassinin in dem Buch nicht gerecht wird. Auf eine bestimmte Art und Weise kann ich diese Kritik auch nachvollziehen. Doch wenn wir in Betracht ziehe, was sie dennoch alles vollbracht hat, dann komme ich zu einer anderen Meinung. Sie klettert mit bloßen Händen Wände hoch, zeigt makellose Fähigkeiten beim Bogenschießen, sie springt über die Spitzen von Wasserspeiern. Selbst Kämpfe, die sie nicht hätte gewinnen sollen, hat sie für sich behaupten können. Ganz zu schweigen von ihrem emotionalen Trauma ihrer Vergangenheit bis hin zur teils sadistischen Erziehung innerhalb der Gilde der Assassinen, was wohl für viele schon ausreichen würde, um daran zu brechen. Celaena aber behält ihre Stärke und sie bewahrt ihren Geist.

Neben Celaena ist das Tournament, an dem sie teilnehmen muss, ein wichtiger Teil des Buch. Trotzdem, dass die Intervalle zwischen den einzelnen Herausforderung recht langsam und wiederholend waren, waren die einzelnen Aufgaben sehr interessant ausgeführt. Viele Kampfszenen sind leider den Gedanken der Charaktere zum Opfer gefallen, dafür gab es aber in jeden Fall, wichtige Einblicke der einzelnen Charaktere. Und ich werde das Gefühl nicht los, dass einige noch wichtig werden.

Die Dreiecksbeziehung in Die Erwählte ist unbequem, klobig und manchmal geradezu belustigend; Es ist auch der Hauptgrund dafür, dass meine Bewertung auf 4 Sterne abgefallen ist. Die Art von Celaenas Romanze mit Sam in den fünf Vorgeschichten war einfach anders. Obwohl ich Chaol sofort wesentlich attraktiver fand als Dorian, fiel es mir schwer, einen der potenziellen Verehrer zu unterstützen. Celaena und die beiden Männer haben jedoch viele lustige Szenen, die mich oft Schmunzeln ließen. Die Verbindung, die sie am Ende aber zu den beiden entwickelt hat, empfand ich als bedeutsam.

Fazit

Aber mehr als alles andere hat Die Erwählte dort weitergemacht, wo mich die Novellen zurückgelassen haben. Dieser erste Hauptband hat mich in eine Welt hineingezogen, über die ich unbedingt mehr erfahren möchte. Mehr als meine Belustigung über die Dreiecksbeziehung, die gelegentlich unbeholfene Sprache oder die Verärgerung, die sich aus Celaenas lächerlichen Momenten ergibt. Sarah J. Maas weiß ganz genau, wie sie ihre LeserInnen in ihren Bann zieht.

This was alright. I'm excited to get further along in the series though, because I remember liking some of the characters that show up in later books. ( )

I never really wanted to read "Throne of Glass" by Sarah J. Maas because the cover did not appeal to me and my impression was that it was overhyped. But then my husband read it last year and liked it, and he suggested that I should give it a try.

Young and beautiful Celaena has been slaving away as a captive in a salt mine when she is suddenly visited by the Captain of the Royal Guard. She is offered one chance to escape the mine and thus survive: If she wins a tournament held in the capital city that will determine who will be the next Royal Assassin.

This is a typical YA fantasy story that has all the ingredients: Beautiful protagonists, a tournament, love interests, a heroine with great abilities, evil villains and heartbreaking moments. But it really is a page turner and I just could not stop reading. While I rolled my eyes more than once, especially during some of the romantic moments, it was also great fun. I grew fond of the characters and was totally sucked into the story. I cannot wait to see how everything unfolds! ( )

I started reading this book due to how much I enjoyed the ACOTAR series. I really struggled with getting through this one. I went in with the expectations of loving it just as much as ACOTAR and was let down. Overall the storyline was ok but it just really didn’t keep my attention. I want to read the rest of the series to see where the story goes but with how difficult it was for me to get through the first one I am not sure I want to try the rest. ( )
