I had four stars worth of fun reading this, but it has enough thematic and story problems that I should really give it less.

The female characters are treated pretty shoddily (by the author, I'd say, moreso even than Jack Barron), and good ol' Jack is waaaaay too slow on the uptake in figuring out things that are obvious to the reader as soon as they come up.

But the language is a riot, the rough racial content is for good ends, and it's a good moral outrage romp in a "Network" kind of way.

Plus I always enjoy outdated futurism. ( )

A good time, as a late-night talk show host takes on the economic powers that be. As the prose pretty good, I've considered it one of Spinrad's best. ( )

Perhaps this book is no longer politically correct, but I found it to be one of the most interesting books I've ever read. The first chapter alone was so dramatic, funny and cynical, I fell over in my chair. Literally! Then I got up and read some more. On a more serious note, the book is one of the great New Wave science fictions of the 60s. It just missed winning the Hugo, losing to THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS, but hey, what can you do. It's still a fantastic book, full of socio-political commentary and proves that Spinrad had a crystal ball into the future. Ignoring the misses in technology, he very well describes the zany world of infotainment which surrounds us. Even though not everyone will understand New Wave SF, I can not give a higher rating. Everyone should read this book: whether they like it or not! ( )

Un grande romanzo scritto piu' di 40 anni fa ma dove le molte “risonanze” con l'attuale situazione politica italiana non sono forse casuali.
Da qualche tempo ormai i sociologi, i filosofi ed i politici si pongono una domanda dai riflessi angosciosi: fra venti anni, quando i giovani che oggi «contestano» tutto, si drogano e predicano il libero amore, saranno saliti, come è legge naturale, ai posti di comando, cioè saranno divenuti la cosiddetta «classe dirigente», quale aspetto assumerà la nostra civiltà occidentale? A questa domanda risponde Norman Spinrad, una degli autori piu' critici della fantascienza americana (non a caso ha vissuto per un lungo periodo in Francia), con un romanzo nella cui trama si sviluppano gli elementi d'inquietudine, come i nuovi limiti della morale, la violenza, le tensioni razziali, il condizionamento della personalità tramite i mezzi di comunicazione di massa, la corruzione politica, la mancanza di qualsiasi ideale che non sia utilitaristico; e quelli ipotizzati per l'immediato futuro, come la ricerca dell'immortalità, l'ibernazione artificiale, la definitiva mercificazione di ogni attività umana superiore. In un'America istupidita dalla televisione, che accantona i suoi problemi dimenticandoli con la droga ed il sesso, una lotta occulta per un potere non limitato entro l'arco di una legislatura o di una vita umana, ma assoluto, ed esteso a tutta l'eternità.
