- Cumberland County's newest library is West Regional Branch. Doors open on Oct. 2, 2010. The 14,000 square-foot facility had a $5.7 million budget including construction, furnishings and its initial collection of nearly 55,000 books, CDs and DVDs.
WRL's stunning architecture provides a welcoming environment with plenty of space to relax and enjoy books, do homework, or access the internet through the public computer labs or free Wi-Fi. Meeting rooms can be reserved through the library's website at www.cumberland.lib.nc.us.
The children's area includes computers reserved just for them and a large activity room for regular story times and other fun learning programs. Parents may request a laptop for use in this area for their convenience while they supervise their children.
Teens have their own room with eight computers, comfortable seating and a large collection of books, magazines and graphic novels. Adults will find 18 computers in the main computer lab as well as wireless internet access for those with their own laptops or net books. Multiple copiers and a fax machine are also available.
WRL is the first to implement technology that enables customers to check out materials on their own by placing materials on a designated pad and entering their library card number at the check-out station. Onscreen instructions direct a customer to speak with staff if there is a problem with the account such as a needed update. Staff are on hand to check out books in the traditional manner upon request.
Another unique feature of WRL is that it is physically attached to New Century International Elementary School. While large glass doors separate WRL from the school's media center during the school day, after school hours, on weekends and during the summer, the doors are lifted and the media center's materials are accessible to the public.
