Hi,
I have been listening to Outlander while sewing and was wondering about Claire's story to the clansmen about where she came from. She said that she and her servant were from Oxford and travelling to France when they were attacked by highway men. What confuses me is that Oxford is in the southern part of England and France is usually sailed to across the English Channel which is at the extreme south of the country. How, then, did she end up in the Scottish Highlands? I am, of course, aware that she had just stepped through the standing stones from her time to the 18th century while visiting Scotland but why did she give them that particular geographical explanation?
Did I miss something?

No, you are quite right. But she needed to give a location in England, and fairly near to London, to account for her accent. And since Scotland had a close relationship with France (not sure if there were problems between England and France just then) it was just about reasonable to travel via Scotland. It did sound somewhat dubious, and led various people to suspect she was a spy.
