You should post this to the LC Classification challenge group!
Breadth:
Personally I'd set the Golden and Platinum classifications in category one farther apart -- there only are 220 total letter pairs, after all. (Besides, at 97, I'd be within striking distance of Golden if it was at 100, and there's a massive distance between silver and golden as is!)
Expertise:
Dilettante in D (history)
Dilettante in E (history of America)
Dilettante in F (local history of the Americas)
Dilettante in G (Geography, Anthropology, Recreation)
Dilettante in H (Social Sciences)
I'm going to skip P, since it's so dominated by fiction that it's not really representative or interesting here.
Archivist in Q (Science)
Dilettante in T (Technology)
Category 3:
E and F are degenerate cases here, lacking the two-letter categories.
Garnet for GV
Garnet for HQ
Skipping P again

Garnet for QB
Garnet for QC
Garnet for QH
Amethyst for QL

Thanks for joining in! I was afraid it would seem rude if I advertised in another fellow's group. As for GOLD and PLATINUM LOCS, you're absolutely right.
Let's make GOLD 100 and PLATINUM 220.
What should we do about E and F?

It wasn't rude - that's how I found you! There are so many groups, it's hard to find ones to join. This challege will prod me to get all my books loaded into LT faster so I can see what I've got.
Question - do we have to own the books, or have just read them? I have so many, I've stopped buying and started going to the library - but I still enter my library books as I read them.

Well, it's a collection game so I was thinking in terms of collecting.
On the other hand, you could argue that library books you've read are in your meta-collection.
Bottom line, if it's fun, do it! :)

Do we get little icons to put on our profile pages? ;) I hope we don't need to have read them yet.

I'm a long way from a Platinum LOC. If nothing else this little exercise will help me get better organized and clean up some loose ends.
I decided I'd better stick some numbers in there to keep track.

First, here are the numbers (I probably miscounted a few times, but I doubt by much):
A 3 (AC, AP)
B 72 (B, BD, BF, BH, BJ, BL, BM, BP, BQ, BR, BS, BT, BX)
C 15 (CB, CC, CS, CT)
D 135 (D{21}, DA, DB, DC, DD, DF, DG, DL, DP, DS{53}, DT, DU)
E 146
F 56
G 187 (G, GB, GF, GN, GR, GT, GV{168})
H 321 (H, HB{20}, HC{25}, HD{113}, HE, HF, HG, HJ, HM, HN{24}, HQ{35}, HS, HT, HV{21}, HX{33})
J 44 (JA, JC, JF, JK, JL, JN, JQ, JV, JX)
K 25 (KF{23}, KFC, KZ)
L 36 (LA, LB{23}, LC, LD)
M 51 (M{30}, ML, MP, MT)
N 25 (N, NC, ND)
P 526 (P, PA, PC, PE, PG{20}, PJ, PL, PN{55}, PQ{45}, PR{102}, PS{215}, PT{22}, PZ{24})
Q 70 (Q, QA, QB, QC, QD, QE, QH, QL, QP)
R 13 (R, RA, RC, RG, RM)
S 2 (SB, SF)
T 25 (T, TA, TG, TL, TR, TS, TX)
U 9 (U, UA, UB, UG)
V 0
Z 1 (+47, incomplete set of Harvard Classics filed under Z)
Main categories: 20/21 (I guess I need to buy one of my 5 wishlisted books on maritime history)
Sub-categories: 116

Sub-dividing E and F is a problem. For E you could go by 100s, although it's a bit arbitrary. But with F that method would give 35 sub-categories, which seems like too many to me.

How about we use their top outline levels and assign our own letter codes for the game?

It does appear that I do have the cookbooks going on. No wonder my kitchen mate complains. You would think I could generate some food with all that culinary advice.
16pamdis
LOL varielle! I too have a book case full of cook books that I read but never actually use. I enjoy reading the recipies and imagining how good everything would taste - but if I cooked it, it would not turn out right. So I don't bother - just dream!

I just stumbled upon this thread and thought I'd post an update. Counting only books I currently own since it is after all a "collecting" game:
