Does anyone have suggestions for comic books or graphic novels that might be suitable for a 3rd grader? My daughter's school has a fairly aggressive and regimented reading program, so when she's home she doesn't feel much like reading a big, thick book (can't say that I blame her on that score, and since she tests above her grade level for reading, I'm not going to push her). I thought it might be fun for her to read some comic books or graphic novels, but I don't have much experience with this genre. Can anyone recommend something that would be suitable for her age? (I'm doing a bit of early xmas shopping this year, which naturally includes books).

Depending on her exact level of reading, and your toleration for books based on tv shows, you might want to try "cine-manga" ... these give shows ranging from SpongeBob to Kim Possible the manga treatment ... Googling the term "cine-manga" is a good place to start.

Because so much of what graphic novels are about is not being for kids, off the top of my head I can think of only two things that should be fine -both are the "realistic" treatment of superhero books that Marvel and DC put out, and they feature stories with their respective superhero properties. Both are well done though:
Marvels
Kingdom Come
Both showcase the exceptional rendered artwork of Alex Ross.
As you can imagine, going the further distance and thinking of something for girls specifically is going to be even more difficult. If I think of something I'll bring it back here.

The Mouse Guard comics by David Petersen are absolutely gorgeous (and who doesn't love mice with swords?). I also really enjoyed Peanutbutter and Jeremy's Best Book Ever! by James Kochalka. Both I think are probably age appropriate.

And then there is Owly by Andy Runton.
No words, just lovely pictures.
If she likes dogs there is also Korgi by Christian Slade.

Yep, 8 years old.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I actually found a few series I think she might like -- the Magic Pickles and Amelia Rules are whacky enough and written for her age group. I suggested Peanuts to her because I loved Peanuts at that age, but alas, she's shown no interest in dear old Charlie Brown and gang. Owly looks cute, too.

You know what, I did think of stuff that could be very appropriate, possibly even perfect. It took me a few tries but:
Castle Waiting, which if she has any interest in Harry Potter, this should be an easy sale, and Bone-Jeff Smith, which combines a Disney type Medieval setting with Pogo type characters. Both feature fantasy oriented, amusing good natured stories for everybody.
Here's some links to get an idea of what these things look like:
