Modern Classical

So I was reading this article about how classical music lovers and heavy metal lovers are very similar in their tastes. And it made me think of this article which sort of explained why that may be.

So I went looking for what I have seen mostly referred to as "modern classical".
There are bands that perform orchestral version of popular songs like 2Cellos, or movies/ video games like Lindsey Stirling, or even rap songs like Black Violin.
Then there are those bands that perform mostly original pieces in a classical style like Rasputina.
And now in recent years I have seen what is referred to as "symphonic metal" (like Nightwish ) , which I guess ties in with the article about how classical music and heavy metal are very similar.

But I wonder are these the modern pieces that will one day be considered "classical" from the current era? Or just new arrangements of the original classics?

Will this keep interest in classical style music going? Or is it degrading to the original style?

Can you think of other examples where classical music has influenced something current?

What immediately came to my mind is Rick Wakeman. And also ELP (Emerson, Lake & Palmer), Jethro Tull, and now I am obviously dating myself :) as those were current to me ... some forty or fifty years ago.

I don't keep up with modern music these days. OH I did just think of a group that calls themselves "Red Priest" and I liked their renditions of the Four Seasons. Not sure if they are still performing, but I liked their take on the Seasons.
