How did this compare to the first two books in the series? Any thoughts on the series overall?

I like the series. It's not as intense as some of the series I read but it's nicely paced and offers a break from the blood and mayhem that i usually read. I also think it appeals to people like me that don't mind the more graphic (Chris Carter)... to people that read what could almost be called cozies.

This series is a bit slow but good overall. In comparison, I think I prefer Ellis' Joe Plantagenet series.

I like the series once we start it as a group, but I don't think I would read it on my own.

I like Plantagenet series better but this one is interesting too.

All have been 4.5's for me. I quite enjoy the histories that unfurl as the archeological digs progress.
