I think he's a red herring. He is definitely still hiding something (why'd the wife get sick after speaking with the police?) but I don't think it's the murder.

I agree. The man is simply looking for a more interesting reason for his existence. Being descended from former Lords of the Manor would no doubt boost his self-esteem.
