it seems like with all the trouble that Fleccer gets into in the italicized parts that he's headed for a public hanging at some point - maybe this has to do with his family

I'm expecting Fleccer to have a bad ending, too, but I don't see how that could be of significance to today. Perhaps it points to the murderer having historical, or at least local, knowledge?

A young woman was executed on that tree 5 centuries earlier. So was Pauline Brent executed too?

I think the tree was used as a place of execution for the past 500 years. It's symbolic to the murder so it was fitting that Pauline was placed there.
