I tried the ROOT challenge this year, playing it safe, and pledging 12 books, which I surpassed (yay me!) by 2 books. I still ended up with more books at the end of the year than what I started with.
This year I'm pledging 24 books - a bit of a step up from last year, but last year I was only considering books acquired in 2012 or before. This year I count as ROOT anything not acquired in 2019. But I'll try to read at least 15 books acquired before 2011.

Finished the first ROOT of the year, Oranges are not the only fruit. Took me longer than I thought it would, even though I liked the voice of the story. But I started to lose interest towards the end of the book.

I forgot to update that I finished another ROOT about 2 weeks ago. Finished The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury.

Last weekend I managed to finish 3 Roots! An ER book from last year, Steampunk International, a graphic novel - Nimona, and a book that is probably one of the oldest on the TBR, Bichos by Miguel Torga, which I got some time in the 90s (edition is from 95, so it's probably from then or the year after).

A new ROOT added but not completely read. I couldn't finish O Tempo dos Imperadores Estranhos by Ignacio del Valle, and gave up on it about 20% in. With so many books to read, I figure I shouldn't be spending time with one that was giving me no pleasure.

>12 quigui: Oh absolutely! I always used to be a finisher, no matter what, because I felt I had to finish a book I started. But now I'm that bit older, I think that life's too short (and like you say, there are too many other books) to spend time on a book I'm not enjoying.

>13 Jackie_K: I used to be a finisher or at least get the book back to the TBR to try again later. But that one is just going to find a new home.
I have now finished another ROOT, which I really enjoyed - The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater.

>12 quigui:, >13 Jackie_K: I agree completely with that. Life is to short and there are to many books to read. I used to be a finisher too, but with age comes (some) wisdom ;-)
