Were you surprised when Lydia and Joe broke off? Is there any hope for Joe developing a lasting relationship?

Not surprised at all; Joe is still totally caught up in his late wife, and Lydia was still damaged goods at this point in time.

I was a little surprised and disappointed because I think Joe needs someone at this time.

Not in the least. Joe doesn't want a relationship...he wants a friend with benefits. Lydia was smart to get out and not be that friend. I'm getting a little frustrated with Joe. I think Emily would be that friend in a heart beat if Joe gave her a chance.

>4 Carol420: I think you just might be right about Emily, Carol; she certainly has a soft-spot for Joe.

I’m not surprised at all by what happened, it is a repeating pattern as Joe still hasn’t got over the loss of his wife. This is understandable but Joe does need to move on, but if he can’t then he shouldn't put himself out there in the first place.

not surprised. They got together while both were in stressful situations. I was sorry to see that Sally had moved on - we were rooting for her the last few books

It's the same story in every book. He's attracted to a woman and rushes into a relationship. Then he gets scared and backs away.
