Get out from a burning house, with your tenants and your family personal documents.

Any precious books to save from the fire? I have to make an inventory of these rare books(Do I have any books worthwhile to keep?) , and put aside for easy retrieval during disasters.

A photo album or albums of old photographs of portraits and your ancestry's relatives ( Do consider worthwhile to retrieve during a fire?)

Right now.the first prevention, not to be injured or killed during the moment when there is an outbreak of fire in the home.

Our lives cannot be "duplicated".

I would grab whatever I'm currently reading. There is a website devoted to pics of what people would rescue. Back in a mo when I find the link.

There was a period in which I dithered over what I would do if I could save only one thing from my burning house--if I saved the dog I'd be missing & longing for my books for the rest of my life. And I'd resent the dog. If I saved my library instead I'd feel guilty for the rest of my life. And I'd miss the dog. That theoretical choice was difficult enough; I know I couldn't choose one book.

If your home were on the outbreak of serious fire, what three things would you honestly save , forget about the books ?

My family,documents and hard cash.

My books (numbering in the low thousands) can each be replaced for between 25 cents and $10 (mostly the former). And most, are available online or from multiple, free, libraries.

As long as LT doesn't burn down, I am good to go.

Forget about the books, run for your life from the first.

Always look for the silver lining.

It's a good question and I've never really thought about. My collection is in itself irreplaceable and I would be devestated if I lost it having used so much time to build it up. Maybe one should house ones collection in more than one place?

1. Maybe you can insure your rare book collections with a household insurance policy?

2. Put in the bank's safe deposit boxes.

3. Put in the sizeable home fire protection safe boxes.

A principal reason I started cataloging my books here was to have a list in case of a disaster.
