I was going to start a group for people without Harry Potter books - but saw this one and though it was just as good. So - I have nothing against Harry Potter books if - except that I am an adult. Since I was over 13 when they came out and I don't have children to read them to - why would I read Harry Potter? I would expect both people with children and people who started the series as children and hence got into the characters to read the books - are others? Why?

#1 - because they are an enjoyable way to waste a weekend once every year or so. Nothing wrong with fluff. Nothing at all.

I'm just not into magic/wizards kind of stuff ... and I, too, was put off by the fact that they're YA books ...

I haven't read any of them. I tried to start one (I think it was the first one) and couldn't even slog through the first five pages. Initially I avoided them just because of all the hype...but I'm really just not into the whole fantasy thing. Lord of the Rings & C.S. Lewis's books are others I just can't pick up. Not to mention there are about a thousand other books on my to-read list ;)

I don't have anything against the Potter books, and I think it's great that finally *something* came along that brought reading back to the masses, but I don't feel any deep drive to read them myself. Not to be smug but I can't imagine there's anything in there that I haven't already imagined is in there...good wizards, bad wizards, creepies and crawlies, heroes and villains, nothing that wasn't already done by CS Lewis, Ursula Le Guin or JRR Tolkien. I've loved all of those series, but I guess I've just had my fill of it.
