So I read this as a par of the Year of the Book community and it turns out that while my bus was trudging to Pennsylvania, that's where the book took place. That was kind of creepy in itself. I don't know how suspenseful the book was, but it was certainly an enjoyable read. There were times when things sort of repeated at the beginning, even up to page 150 and beyond, but it didn't really stop my wanting to read or get in the way of my experience too much.

Next she dialed her mom. She used the speakerphone, hating the hands-free ear thingy that looked like something out of Star Trek. p150
Ha! But is it a /good/ thing to knock technology and say you /don't/ want it because it's a star trek thing? I was headed to a convention, too, so I actually stopped and pondered this. I suspect the character hates the show, actually. :p

She was surprised to find Nick and Meghan engrossed in a video game when she returned. Their household was not big on TV, instead they focused most of their free time together on physical activities, reading, cooking, gardening, talking. p251
I had to read this twice before I realized they weren't actually listing reading as a physical activity. Not written badly, just didn't want to be stumbled in the middle of a good detective story. As you can see, I hardly took any notes at all. And that's not because I couldn't get off the bus to get my pen. :)

In Chapter 27 I made so many notes that I'll just sum it up like this... Clearly the editor was on vacation the day that chapter came in.

"Yeah, mom would have been forty-four when she had him." Burroughs gave a mock shiver. "Would have been in her sixties when he was a teenager, think how gross that would be." p315
Explain to me why this is gross?

"Might even call in sick tomorrow, bake some brownies for my daughter's soccer team, plant some mums, and, God help me, go shopping for a puppy." p434
I had a chuckle at that. Not a loud one, but that line is just so true to life. Usually you find the end of things somewhat staged or forced. That was nice to read near the conclusion.

Review to come... Back to work for me. :p

I have to say, I loved your comment about chapter 27.

I don't know why it's gross being in your sixties when the child is a teenager... baffles me. But in my extended family, this is the norm anyway, so... not so gross - not gross at all.

Like the review too.... though I have to say, you figure /most/ things out right away, not just books of this type.

I'm starting to think the plot figuring out is coming from all the reading I've done over the years? I don't know, I just seem to remember that I USED to be able to watch television and just /enjoy/ it rather then know the ending all the time... Same with reading. I always read a lot, but maybe it's because I didn't used to take notes for review purposes? Maybe this was a bad idea. :p
