I've just contacted Jeremy (or did someone contact him before me?), and this wiki:

is now open for us. I typed a couple of lines at the top of it. That's all. It needs to be filled!

This wiki answers a demand made in another thread a couple of days ago. I could have posted this in this thread, but I preferred to advertise it more clearly. The remaining question is how to advertise it at the Group level once this thread will have disappeared in the big thread ocean. I think its URL should be given in the introductory text of the FSD group. But for that, we need to contact Kieren Valente...

I've already taken a stab at getting something going here. I figured a glossary at the beginning would be nice (we devotees use a lot of abbreviations and jargon that a newbie might not get right away), and I figured we'd want to categorize Q&As and information somewhat. So, I've entered a few that I assume we'd want included, and left space for some that I don't feel I'm best qualified to complete.

Everyone please feel free to edit what I've entered, and, if the format I've suggested doesn't seemt to be on target, please raise that issue here (preferably with a suggested change).

Pepys - hope I've not stepped on your toes by going ahead with this. If so, my apologies, and feel free to edit freely.

Well, I just clicked on the FAQs link (didn't notice it was a link at first) and realize that I may have made a mess of it. Advice, please. It's not clear to me how to move what I've already done to the FAQs link page. Does the FAQs page allow for headings so we can categorize the Q&As a bit?.

Again, sorry if I've mucked it up. I'll leave it alone for now so you can see what I did and let me know how best to proceed.

No worries, Os. Everybody is of course welcome to lend a hand. If some info isn't put in the right place, it will be improved afterwards. I couldn't do much more than enter a few lines yesterday because I'm doing this with my IPad, and it's not that easy.

The best thing to do for the moment is to go to the Group category on the wiki, where other groups have already put some info, and look how they did. I think the main page of our group could also provide a link to the Google map with our positions, and statistics on the age of members.

This may be a stupid question, but where on LT do I find the link to go to the Wiki index???
I have checked all of the tabs and can't find it.

I don't know myself. If this link exists, it is well concealed.

Scroll to the very bottom of your home page and you will see the WikiThing link. If you click on the left Recent Changes you will see all the recent activity. Can't find the link to Groups.

Thanks, drasvola. I remember having seen it there, but I rarely look at the bottom of pages. The link to WikiThing is actually at the bottom of most pages (except libraries).

As for the link to the Groups... the only way I know is to go to the FSD wiki and click on Groups at the bottom of the page.

If the link to the wiki is added to the group description at the top of the group page it wouldn't have to be re-posted at all.

Can anyone but the FSD group creator (kieren_valente) add the link, or should he be contacted directly?

Under the "Books we share" section, is there a way to show covers which are FS covers instead of what shows up now?

This is a question to angelikat. I'm rather inclined to think that, if it were possible, she would have managed to show them...

Generally, information that is gleened from common info related to works (Common knowledge, tags, etc.) will present the default image (I think it's the most popular) for the work. Since the work includes FS and other publisher editions, it would be unusual for the FS image to show up as the default.

Are you telling me the link shouldn't be placed with the group info because it can be found elsewhere? I don't get why it could not be linked to from a place everybody sees.

A less than satisfactory, temporary fix - I put the FS age stat table up with the group pictures (the one thing any member can add to), with a link to the Wiki page in the title, and made it the default image for the group page. You have to know to click on the image to get to the link, however, so it's really just a quick way to get there, not a way for newbies to find it.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to contact Kieren Valente about adding the link.

Proposed topic for FAQ: the Folio 60 (?), whatever its proper name, what it is and how to consult it.

My understanding gleaned from various posts read over 3+ years is that it's an annotated catalogue of FS titles including those currently out of print, in second or later printings, or in multiple editions. Does it include a complete list of titles through 2012? Who wrote it? What are its limitations?

I notice that kieren valente has responded, and a link to the FAQ has been incorporated into the Group's main page. Thank you, kieren. All thanks also to the kind agents involved.

Can we agree to leave links out of the 1st and 2nd level headings, so they retain their native color (green for 2nd level). I'm fine with links in third level headings and below, but in the 1st (title) and 2nd (major headings), the color change associated with links makes it hard to see the overall structure. I've modified the opening description section (adding the 2nd level heading "Introduction") and the "Questions About The Folio Society Frequently Asked by Aspiring Devotees" section in this way, and I think it makes the overall page easier to navigate.Os.

I added the montage of Folio books to the Group Pictures section many months ago but did not make it the primary picture. The title Group Website does not really grab new members or browsers that this is where one should go to get information about the group and have FAQ answered. Can it be retitled Group Information or Group FAQ?
What we want new members and browsers to do is go to this site and find all the information needed to become an active member without repeating questions that have been discussed multiple times before.

No, the field cannot be renamed and it is not what it is supposed to be used for anyway.
The link to the Wiki should be really just incorporated in the description...

The Group Website link appears near the top of my Folio Society Devotees blog page just to the southwest the FS logo picture. It directs you to the wiki page.

I have an excel spreadsheet which lists all FS books from 1947 - is this something that could/should be included?

I haven't posted much here since Sunday (French Alps hit by 4.3 magnitude quake, with many aftershocks; I'm a fool to spend time here ;-)

Just to say that I like better the (wcarter, I think)'s picture with an artistic display of tightly packed books for the group picture in the FSD home page. (Rather than the FS logo, which is better anyway than the statistic bar display; I hadn't realized it was an error and wondered why it was there!)

Could we organize a vote (in another thread) just to know which picture has more favour?

I definitely think your spreadsheet should be included as a resource. Not all members (or prospective members) have Folio 60 at their fingertips. In addition you've added the books published since Folio 60, so you may have the most current list of books until Folio 70 sees the light of day (in 2016 one presumes). I printed your spreadsheet out and refer to it frequently. Belated thanks for compiling this.

Would it be a good idea to provide links to FS books collections of any willing devotees (perhaps one or two per region) to show the extent of 'devotion' and cataloguing 'tricks' displayed?

As far as links to FS books collections from devotees, This sounds like a good idea. However, are you talking about linking to their LT catalogue, but limited to FS books? If so, I'm not sure how to create that link. When I look at "Your Books" and select the "Folio Society" collection I've created, the URL is the same as that for my entire collection. If you can suggest a way to re-direct someone to a LT page showing only a users FS books, I'd be glad to add a section to the wiki page and include my FS library.

The easiest way is to get to the Profile and select the collection from there and not from the Catalog itself. When you choose inside of the catalog, you are in a frame so the top address does not change.

I've created a section for this on the main wiki page, right after "Member library photos". I included drasvola and AnnieMod. Please delete your entry, or ask me to, if you didn't intend for it to be used.

Not sure about listing these on a line (may be more confusing to someone trying to enter an new item), but a vertical list for such short lines seems likely to become to long.

I don't know whether or not this would be something to put in the FAQ, but it's something I've been wondering about: I see a lot of people referring to spine-sagging in their larger books when stored vertically, and I was wondering what this actually is, and how big a book needs to be to necessitate horizontal storage.

I've taken the liberty to add new categories to the Group´s Wiki for front or back of the shelf, slipcases, shelving tall books, general book care and Limited Editions. They are empty. Perhaps other devotees wish to contribute pertinent content. Thanks.

I've updated the age stats on the wiki to the latest from the related thread. I should stop putting them in the thread and simply link to the wiki page. That will keep the wiki up-to-date and will remind folks of the wiki page more often.

I've added a fourth option to "How to add an FS book to your LT library". It's a script created by brightcopy which is designed to run on Firefox browser, will work on Google Chrome (though you may have to add the Tampermonkey add-on to Chrome before the script will work), but won't work on Microsoft Internet Explorer. As with other options, it's not perfect - it captures the basic info from a user's 'book details' page, but not all the fields are captured and it doesn't capture the image.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

The latest modifications and additions to the wiki improve substantially its usefulness. Every bit helps because in my opinion this resource is not accessed as often as it should.

If any of you younger types want to see some old (but not that old) Folio Prospectuses, then I've added links to scanned pdf's for those for 1999-2008 to the FSD wiki page (in the 'Index of Folio Books' section).
They vary in size from about 30MB to over 100MB, so may take a while to open.
There's also a searchable index so you can see what each pdf contains.
The FS have given permission for these links to be added to the wiki.

The pdf files on the wiki listing all published FS books came in very handy today in the way of reassuring me. I was looking through the most recent listings of FS books on eBay and was shocked to find Angels & Demons/The Da Vinci Code Dan Brown The Folio Society New in Shrink Wrap. I thought: "surely the FS would never..."

I won't be a hypocrite and admit I did read both bestsellers around the time they came out and did enjoy them for what they were, but can't imagine ever wanting to get fine editions of them.

Oh, dear, the pictures in the link look suspiciously like the books I have. Like Smiler69 I was curious about the books and ordered them through one of the mail-order book clubs (Doubleday, Book-of-the-Month) I used to belong to. I can't remember what I paid but most of the stuff I bought from them would have been only a few dollars more than a good paperback. So, yeah, I think we should feel sorry for the seller. If he bought them as Folios he probably did pay way too much.

I'm updating the schedule of FS shipping charges in the FAQ of our wiki. Going into the two regional pages of the Folio Society, it's not clear to me whether New Zealanders are charged in Australian dollars or New Zealand dollars. Would a knowledgeable person please clarify? Thanks.

Faisel, my scanner can scan to multi-page PDF's, so it's just the time-consuming process of scanning each page in turn. Much easier if you remove the staples first of course (if you can bear to do so!). If you're anything like me it'll take a lot longer than it should because you'll read each page before you scan it ("Oh why didn't I buy East of the Sun and West of the Moon when I had the chance!" etc).
When I checked the last one I did (some time ago) I discovered I had missed a page - not for the first time - so went to make a consoling cup of tea and haven't got round to redoing that or any subsequent ones (this is why I haven't loaded 2011-2013 yet - I will get round to it though).

I scan the index page and use an OCR program to create an editable version. It's then just a case of messing around in Excel to update the index spreadsheet. Trial 30-day versions of OCR progs can be downloaded for free.

As I've already mentioned, this is a rainy-day task for when you're just not in the mood for sitting down with a good book - possibly another reason I haven't got round to doing the others.

I have been doing some more housekeeping on the FSD wiki page (http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Groups:Folio_Society_Devotees) to hopefully may it more visually appealing and functional. Please note that the webpage is dynamic and will appear in different formatting on different size screens. This particularly applies to the tables, which look best on a larger desktop screen, and may appear messy on smaller (eg. tablet) screens.

I have also added extra features to the list of FS Limited Editions and Letterpress Shakespeare entries (http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Groups:Folio_Society_Devotees#Folio_Society.2C_Limited_and_Special_Editions) by adding in links to scans of brochures and/or leaflets for about half the LEs. Just click on the blue "leaflet" or "brochure" next to the book name to be taken to a PDF file of the original promotional material of the LE. Links to other interesting FS brochures have been scattered at appropriate locations through the wiki page. Some of these PDFs are quite large and may take a minute or so to download, depending on your web speed.
Some of the brochures for the LE are published in A2 format, and it is a challenging task to scan these on an A4 scanner, then stitch them together in Photoshop. Some have worked better than others.
I have exhausted my supply of LE leaflets and brochures. If there are other FSD members who have copies of brochures for those LEs that do not have a link to a brochure, particularly older ones, and are prepared to scan them and email them to me, please send me a PM. I can stitch the scans together in Photoshop if necessary.

I have requested permission from the FS to use these copies and today received the following email from the FS:-
"Thank you for your email.
I can confirm that you have both our permission and our blessing to use reproductions of our previous prospectuses. I very much hope that they are found to be informative, and that they provide a nice sense of nostalgia to everyone on FSD.

.....would you be able to save the 1999-2010 PDF's (and index) to the Google Drive space please (as you presumably have update access)? It would make sense (and probably be safer) for all the prospectuses to be kept in the same place, and when I added the 1999-2010 PDF's Google Drive didn't exist so I have them in a personal Dropbox folder. I'll then be able to remove them from Dropbox.
There's already a 2000 prospectus in GD and this is better than my scan anyway - I could only scan to A4 so mine contains a lot of white space at the bottom of the page.

I have been looking into Google Drive compared to Dropbox. There are pros and cons both ways, but I prefer Dropbox.
I think the quality of your scans is just fine. The catch is that the higher quality and greater the dpi the scan, the longer it takes to download. I have found 100 dpi to be a good compromise.
I cannot access the Google Drive files of someone else to modify them. I can only download and repost.
I intend to use Dropbox for posting my brochure scans to the wiki as I have a commercial account. If you are no longer happy to host your scans on your Dropbox account, please let me know by PM and I will repost them in my Dropbox.

I will continue to update the wiki regularly. Any suggestions for alterations and additions are welcomed.

Thanks, Warwick. One of my great regrets is that a few years back, in search of space for Folio Prospectuses, I binned literally dozens of these leaflets. I'm sure there must be people in our community not as stupid as I was and donating scans to the Wiki will preserve them for all members for posterity.

Thanks to several contributors, there are now more than 130 leaflets, brochures and prospectuses available for download on the FSD group website wiki, covering everything from modern limited editions, to standard and special editions from decades ago.
More of these are being added almost daily, making the wiki an invaluable resource for all those who love Folio Society books.

Does the wiki contain any information on the FS miniatures? I cannot see anything on them. I have a couple of these tiny editions (which I can't find in my book shelves at the moment, too small I suppose :-) ).

According to Folio 60 the first impression of War and Peace was 2 vols. in 1/4 red leather, grey canvas boards, in a black 2-vol slipcase. A second impression was made by FP for BOMC in 1978, for sale in the US only, in quarter dark red cloth. 3rd imp. was in one vol. in 1978 with graphic slipcase. However the writer goes on to say that the next impression is "at least the fourth revised reprint", so there may well have been impressions that he hasn't traced.

Certainly possible, but I'm applying Occam's razor in suggesting a later edition. My main point is to refute the claim that there was 'definitely a mistake', as the brochure, Folio 25 published in 1972, and my own copy all testify to the standard edition being leather bound.

The second impression was published in 1977, and is Folio Press, not Folio Society. It was for the US market, and printed by Fletcher and Son (details from Folio 60). It's cloth bound, and the spine, apart from the material, looks like the first edition. It would not surprise me if it were dated 1971, there are plenty of examples of early Folios reprinted without the dates being changed. The height, as well as the publishing detail, will be diagnostic.

I don't doubt for a moment that your book is cloth bound, only that it is the first edition.

I've immediately downloaded the comprehensive brochure for Folio's complete Trollope edition, a set I curse for its sheer volume but which looks magnificent on a few tiers of book shelving and which I wouldn't be without.

I managed to contact the founder of FSD, Kieren Valente, and the opening paragraph for the FSD home page has been subtely changed by him to reflect the current non-membership situation.

I have enjoyed perusing the expanded wiki. Thank you to everyone who has helped to build it.

Another devotee, elenchus, sent me a box of material some time ago that I am now getting around to scanning due to the usual life complications.

I believe there are some brochures of single editions that are not already in the wiki, so I will do those first. It looks like only the glossy brochures are being scanned, and not the plain paper descriptions. Is that correct?

I also have some booklets for things like Christmas sales and the like. Is there any interest in having these in the wiki? I don't know that they have additional information about titles, but am willing to scan whatever is wanted.

Also, I know pdf files were requested, but I may need some help uploading them to the wiki. If anyone would be willing to help me with this, please send me a message and I will get in touch when I am at that step in the process. Thanks.

My opinion is that the standard catalogues/prospectuses, and brochures for individual books (usually LEs, fine editions and sets) are all that are needed on the wiki.
The sale booklets merely confuse the overall picture of what books are/were available.

Now that the primary work of scanning the prospectuses and catalogues have been done, we can start thinking about ordering all this raw data. I was wondering if there would be any interest in using them to create a list of titles published by FS - we already have all the titles to 2010, and an addendum for 2011-12. Since I like making lists, I would be prepared to use the online prospectuses to continue this list for 2013-16. What do you think?

Before I start, and having looked at the current lists, there are two issues I would need clarification on:

1. Should I include LE's given that they are already all listed on the Wiki?
2. How to deal with reprints - obviously the FS publishes new editions of titles every so often (Austen, Dickens etc) and these should of course be in any list. But how do you treat an exact reprint of a title which was released a few years ago. It is often mentioned in new releases which are new reprints, but sometimes one cannot know without extensive research into past catalogues and lists, and currently I do not have the energy for that. So what I was thinking, as a start, is to simply list all the titles that FS printed during these years as evidenced from the scanned prospectuses. Once we have done that, we can start thinking of more ambitious projects.

If there is appetite for this, I will do it in Excel and then convert to PDF (am I correct that one cannot upload files other than PDFs to the Wiki?).

Somewhere down the line, it might also be interesting to list the original published prices of books - I guess it can be an interesting exercise to see which books hold their value on the secondary market, etc. etc.

Tracking Greek Myths might be a pretty taxing Odyssey. I have the 23rd printing (2 vols) of 2011, and it's in bonded leather. I have to confess, reluctantly, that it's hard to distinguish from full leather.

I have approached the FS and they do have an archive of ephemera but are not prepared to scan it for us - it would take a great deal of time.
I have not asked them if they will let us have a complete catalogue, but will do so. I suspect that the answer will be no as they will want to protect the data that will make up Folio 70 (or 75).

What I am proposing doing (and have started today) is really just an aid to unlocking the rich mine of data contained in all the prospectuses/catalogues we already have scanned on the wiki. In other words, simply a list of titles with references to the specific prospectus and page number where the book was advertised. Interested readers can then use this index to find quickly information about the book as it was when it was published.

I am by no means a bibliographer who can compare editions over time etc., and that is best left to FS for Folio 70. This will be an interim list until such time.

That would be excellent. It's the missing link and I look forward immensely to seeing this as an addition to the resource. I think you'll find it's time-consuming venture, though.

I'm currently scanning the new Christmas catalogue and hope to have that finished no later than tomorrow (Friday 21 October).

I'm sorry to say that, as daft as it sounds, we don't currently have a current list of everything that we've published that I could send to you. There is a mysterious archivist who can be spotted deep in the Folio basement from time-to-time moving things around and making copious notes who we *think* is working on details for an all-encompassing edition of either Folio 75 (or, if he hurries up and we're lucky, maybe even Folio 70) but at present we haven't seen the full list. I'm sorry for any disappointment that this causes.

Just a thought, there seems be sufficient information on the wiki to add to the last list 2011-12.

My suggestion is that we add another update, as a collaborative project..perhaps using Google sheets. Those who volunteer could take responsibility for the publications of a particular year. It would be a "living" project as new books could be added as they are published.

A couple of pre-Benedictional LEs that aren't referenced in any of the LE sections:

Original Leaves from Famous English Books, 1961, 200 copies
Original Leaves from Famous European Books, 1963, 100 copies

Both titles comprising 12 leaves from famous titles in the history of printing, window-mounted on cardboard.

They are not referenced in Folio 60, but seem to be a precursor to the successful Leaves from a Psalter in 2012.

Fascinating curiosities. As far as I can determine these are individual pages from books from the 15th. to 20th. Centuries that have been removed from the book, framed and issued in a loose leaf folder.

From early on there was a collector's corner at the club dealing in prints, rare books, old pages, autographs etc. A catalogue was printed for out-of-towners, but wasn't sent automatically -- you had to apply. I didn't, because I thought the business of tearing up books for wall display was tacky. I suppose it's a logical and profitable step from selling individual pages to selling bound collections. Those on Abe are from 1961, but IIRC they were still doing this sort of trade in around 1990.

The original manuscript – a mid-fifteenth-century Book of Hours – belonged to a San Francisco collector named John Francis Neylan, who died in 1960. It was sold at Sotheby’s on 18 June 1962 (lot 121) to a London outfit called The Folio Society that was famous for dismembering books to sell as individual leaves or leaf-collections. The Dunedin library purchased their leaf from The Folio Society in 1963...

Indeed. A huge relief. It's a resource I've really missed when it's not there. Someone asked today about how to upload photos and I thought no problem, I'll just fetch that from the Wiki ... oh :(

The FSD wiki thread was started 5.5 years ago by Pepys (from Genoble) and Osbaldistone (from Texas) and today has hit a milestone with 50,000 visits being recorded. Almost 1500 visits a month are now being made to what is now a very comprehensive overview of the Folio Society and its publications. I have been told that any new staff joining the FS are asked to review the wiki before starting work.

Having had my interest rekindled by NLNils in FS Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations, I looked through all the prospectuses, etc in the years around its publication date of 2008 for some information on the set but could find nothing.
I've been thinking of buying it second hand but wanted to know some of the features.
Does anyone know where the FS listing, brochure or prospectus for it might be?

These brochures list every FS book available for purchase in that year. New members had to order four of the new books published in a year, and thereafter could buy books from the back-list in these brochures.

On second thoughts, this graph is so far out of date it is not worth retaining. I think it is just better to refer people to the Talk thread that discusses FSD members' ages.
If someone wants to extract all the data on that thread and make a new graph, they are welcome to do so.

For historical purposes, here is the old graph.

The Folio Society is steadily moving away from printed brochures and catalogues.
In 2022 the FS posted out five individual brochures about books, but none in 2023 and so far none in 2024.
In 2023 the FS did not publish an Autumn catalogue in print, just online. This year there is no printed Summer catalogue.
The FS magazine used to be posted out quarterly, now once a year with an order only.
I suspect that very soon there will be no printed catalogues at all.
An obvious cost saving measure, but disappointing for those of us who keep printed ephemera for reference.
