Do people go in order perfectly, or do people jump around between serieses and books in the series, since, if you know the epis/characters etc. it's not hard to figure out where in the timeline a certain book happens.
Just curious. I'm trying to go back and read from the beginning of each series ('cept for the Original Novels and Enterprise Novels since I'm not a great fan of those). Some I've read before, and most I haven't.
And boy oh boy ILL is helping me a whole ton of a lot, not a popular buy by most libraries... :)

No one else reads Star Trek anymore? What happened? Did folks actually discover true science fiction?

I have to catch up, so, I'm trying to read them in order.
And, sure, some of the novels are uh, pretty darn bad, but some of them are just as good as other Sci Fi... not many, but some... :)

With the old TOS novels, most are self-contained stories and it's fairly easy to transition along the timeline as necessary. The early TNG novels are pretty much the same way. I've not read enough DS9, VOY or ENT to really say. I will say that, since the new movie has come out, it's like Paramount has really loosened it's grip on the "Alpha" universe and let writers like David Mack really do some incredible things.
I'd start with the Titan series - basically the TNG timeline immediately after Nemesis - and read the Destiny series and keep current with all the titles as they're published from that point on. They're not publishing a lot right now, but the TNG books, and Titan books are current in the same post-Destiny timeline now. I wouldn't be surprised if the upcoming Typhon Pact series relaunches the DS9 series and even starts an Aventine series as a result. I'd love to see all these titles moving along consistently.
They still publish new TOS books as well, but, obviously, they're all in a different timeline from the new series. The Destiny trilogy was fantastic and the Typhon Pact series looks every bit as promising.

Back when I read Star Trek novels, I only ever really read the TOS Pocket Books, so reading order was never really an issue except for multi-parters like My Brother's Keeper or New Earth. Otherwise, I just read whatever book looked good at the time.
