- Derailment of the New York Central's "Chicagoan" near White Pigeon, MI on November 16, 1957. Due to a prior accident on its normal route, the passenger train had been detoured by the dispatcher. The crew was not aware of construction on the detour, and ran through a 15 mph construction zone at 48 mph, derailing at a turnout. 11 of 16 cars derailed, resulting in 1 death and 32 injuries. - New York Central locomotive 3503 at the head of a passenger train. The train is westbound at Robinson Street in South Bend, IN. 3503 was a F3A passenger unit built by the Electro-Motive Division in July of 1947. It was delivered as a 3 unit locomotive 3502-3601-3503. In February of 1961, the locomotive was converted to a freight unit at the Collinwood Shop by removing the steam generator and associated equipment, adding counterweight and changing the gear ratio to freight.
