Robert R. Livingston was born on November 27, 1746. He was the oldest son of Judge Robert Livingston and was a prominent figure in New York politics both before and after the American Revolution. Livingston, a graduate of King's College (now Columbia University) was a delegate to the Continental Congress and served on the committee which drafted the Declaration of Independence. Following independence, he served as the Chancellor of New York, the state's highest judicial office, from 1777 to 1801. Livingston also administered the oath at the first inauguration of George Washington at Federal Hall in New York City in 1789.
