Although the books listed in this guide are all pre-1989 (and thus now entering the "classic" phase, or just plain OLD), this is still a great guide for getting into science fiction. If you are new to the genre, you can find the basics and bones here. If you are a long time fan, you can hunt up books you might have missed.

The book lists authors, but it also lists books in groups along themes or motifs, or as being similar or influential. You could make a very interesting study path using this.
