In this novel, Dr. Mortimer becomes a substitute for a physician who must leave London to attend to some family business. One of his patients is a Miss Lavinia Nancarrow, who lives under some rather odd circumstances: her ward, a Mr. Boynton-Leigh, is very overprotective and will not let her venture out of the house. Mortimer's first visit to Miss Nancarrow and Mr. Boynton-Leigh ends up involving him in a rather bizarre mystery that together with another doctor, Violet Branscombe, he must solve.
Actually, the story was quite good, and the author went to great lengths to keep it in the dialog and flavor of the Victorian period. If you enjoy mysteries set in this time frame, then don't miss this one.
