Title: Sand Sister
- Author: Amanda White
- Illustrator: Yuyi Morales
- Publisher: Barefoot Books
- Date: 2004 (year published)
- Pages: 35
- Type of book/genre: Picture book, Fiction
- Short Summary of the plot: The story begins with a little girl named Paloma and her family going to a beach, and Paloma is sad because everyone there has someone to play with and she does not. So, she decides to draw another little girl with curly hair in the sand, and says she wants to have a sister. There was a big mountain of rocks named Big Daddy Rock that saw this and granted her this wish making her drawing come to life. The rock said her new sister can only stick around until the tide comes back in, and that Paloma is the only one that can see her. Her new sister informs her that her name is Sandra, but she also goes by Sandy; they played on the beach doing all sorts of fun activities. Sandy and Paloma started playing jump-the-wave and they were pushing each other while the did it; Sandy pushed to hard and Paloma got all wet and she stormed off before Sandy could explain. Paloma started thinking that she was better off alone, and then she noticed that the tide was coming in, and started looking for Sandy/wanted to apologize. They eventually found each other, hugged, and Sandy gave her a stone with a hole in it, after that she disappeared. After Sandy disappeared, Paloma felt very small and sad. Her parents came up to her, and her dad asked if she met Big Daddy Rock, that the beach was special to him too, and that she can see play with her sand sister any time she wants. The stone that was given to Paloma from Sandy made her smile as they drove away from the beach.
- Tags/Subject headings that describe the content: playmates, sisters, lonely, old-memories.

A little girl named Paloma goes to the beach with her family, and though she thinks it is the most beautiful place in the world, she is sad that other people have brothers and sisters to play with, while she does not. So she constructs another little girl to play with out of the beach sand, appropriately named Sandy. After Sandy pushes Paloma down on accident, Paloma runs away in anger. She soon regrets it as she realizes the tide is coming in and will sweep Sandy away. She finds Sandy just in time and the two exchange farewells before sandy is washed away. When Paloma tells her parents about Sandy, they promise to bring her back to the beach to play with her again. This is a good book about the power of imagination to overcome loneliness, but also the importance of friendships, even those that are destined to be fleeting.… (plus d'informations)
