Read this book while I was actually a young Corporal working for First Sergeant Wesseler. 1982 B Co. !st BN 30th INF, 3rd INF DIV, Ledward Barracks, Schweinfurt, FRG. We were both grunts...me fresh from the Marine Corps and still a young soldier, Wesseler, an old grunt seasoned by Viet Nam. It's the story of Wesseler's combat tour of duty in the RVN as a young grunt with a radio strapped to his back. As a young Corporal eager to succeed and and be the best, this book gave me insight straight into the mind of my first sergeant. That's a very rare opportunity for a young soldier. As fate would have it, the knowledge I gained both from the book and the man got me through the 10 hard years following our assignment together.....probably, no, definitely a life preserver that I needed.
