Susan Abel Sullivan knows the South and knows Southern humor. Her book, Haunted Housewives, calls to mind a combination of Clyde Edgerton, the supernatural, and a bit of horror. It is a wonderful combination, and I was laughing throughout an enjoyable read. This is good writing and good Southern humor. It delves into the often bizarre Elvis culture in the United States, which will have a familiar ring to anyone who knows an Elvis fanatic. This was a splendid read even for a reader like me who prefers “really scary horror.” I highly recommend this book—I promise you will enjoy it—and you will laugh your fanny off.… (plus d'informations)

Susan Abel Sullivan's latest book continues her quirky Southern humor combined with the supernatural--in this case, a (greatly expanded) werewolf tradition. A family on vacation gets caught in a tourist trap with twists they never expected. I would classify this book as a combination of Neil Gaimon's American Gods and an example of a Southern tall tale. As a reader, I could not suspend disbelief--the story is so off the wall that the reader should think of it as a fish story. Read it and enjoy it for what it is--the humor is well-worth it.… (plus d'informations)

So this is a really fun book. I love seeing tropes turned on their heads, and this is full of them. If you're sick of werewolves who act like sexy people in a romance novel, and books that take shapeshifting animal-people too seriously, this is a welcome breath of fresh air. And it has a plot! An engaging one! Cleo may be normal, whatever that is, but the people around her certainly are not.

In a cleverly penned, slightly satirical work, Sullivan has perfectly combined cultural references, a very southern setting and feel, and a fast paced plot that is perfectly alluded to through chapter headings that direct the reader to the conclusions that she has devised.

The story is laugh out loud funny, with solidly defined characters, each more quirky and oddly enjoyable than the last. The dialogue is witty and cleverly intertwines necessary elements to move the plot forward while maintaining a style that has become the hallmark of a good southern storyteller.

With twists, turns, laugh out loud moments and descriptions that bring the visual to the reader, this story is a quick, fun read that will have you looking at the next tacky painting on sale with a new and perhaps jaded eye.

I received an eBook copy from the author for purpose of honest review for the Jeep Diva. I was not compensated for this review and all conclusions are my own responsibility.
