Christopher Sturman

Christopher Sturman, the well-known Lincolnshire scholar of Tennyson and local studies died tragically young in 1997. This selection of eighteen of his Tennyson essays gives a vivid picture of Alfred Lord Tennyson's youthful circle - the landscape and friendship which made up provincial life in Lincolnshire in the early nineteenth century. A cast of minor characters and incidents illuminates this major figure and reveals the significant contribution which an excellent local historian can make to literary scholarship, as he labours with meticulous research 'to rescue from oblivion a thousand scenes and persons of the past'.
