Christopher Sturman, the well-known Lincolnshire scholar of Tennyson and local studies died tragically young in 1997. This selection of eighteen of his Tennyson essays gives a vivid picture of Alfred Lord Tennyson's youthful circle - the landscape and friendship which made up provincial life in Lincolnshire in the early nineteenth century. A cast of minor characters and incidents illuminates this major figure and reveals the significant contribution which an excellent local historian can make to literary scholarship, as he labours with meticulous research 'to rescue from oblivion a thousand scenes and persons of the past'. The essays have been carefully reset from the previously-published versions, incorporating the author's own improvements, and the collection includes the previously-unpublished essay 'Tennyson and Literary Tourism: the Localising Craze', as well as a bibliography of Christopher Sturman's writings and an appreciation by the editor of his contribution to Tennyson studies.… (plus d'informations)
