65 Chronologically arranged readings from Vulgar Latin through the fifteenth century. No effort is made to explain the language, not even in endnotes as in Henry's "Chrestomathie". The editors appear to have believed their effort ended with selection and arrangement. In their own words:

"We offer no apology for the omission of the usual literary and grammatical introduction. Vague generalities would have served little purpose, and an adequate treatment of the subject was clearly impossible within the limited space at our disposal. The bibliographical indications prefixed to the various extracts should compensate in a measure for this deficiency. They should also foster among students the habit of consulting at first hand the chief authorities, instead of relying too implicitly on information supplied by the text-book. For similar reasons we have given no translations and annotated the text very sparingly."
