Great ratings and descriptions of the hikes. It is a definite reference for me anytime I am in California.

This book is written as an invitation to join the "Five Percent Club" -- 95% of American vacationers use only 5% of the available recreational areas.

California offers 20 million acres of national forest, 19 million acres of BLM land, 100 State parks, 53 Federal wilderness areas, and 12 National Parks. The author provides a list and really really brief description of 800 Forest Service, 450 private, 160 State Park, 60 National Park, 60 BLM, and 100 local campgrounds, in California. Codes the "scenic beauty" of the area with a 1-10 rating from Poor to Great - a startling curiosity in what is an encyclopedia of thousands of opportunities to "become one with nature", as John Muir would say.

The "Camping Tips" are for rank beginners who like to hear a few of "my old pal Foonsky" stories.

Provides directions and 60 maps (which have almost no topo or even rivers) for locating the camps, and a detailed name index for cross-referencing.

The only book you need for camping in California. Every campground. The only thing you have to watch out for is that the campground ratings can be skewd in favor of campgrounds with fishing.
