Louis Stettner was born in Brooklyn, New York on November. 7, 1922. During World War II, he enlisted in the Army Signal Corps and served with its photography section in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. After the war, he joined the Photo League in New York. He took photographs while exploring afficher plus the streets of New York and Paris and recording the daily lives of ordinary people. While living in Paris from 1946 until 1951, he studied photography at the Institute for Advanced Cinematographic Studies and exhibited his work in a group show at the National Library in 1949. He had his first solo show at the Limelight Gallery in Greenwich Village in 1954. From 1960 to 1979, he taught photography at several institutions including Brooklyn College, Queens College, Cooper Union, and the C. W. Post Center at Long Island University. His photographs have been collected in several books including Early Joys and Penn Station, New York. He died on October 13, 2016 at the age of 93. (Bowker Author Biography) afficher moins
