Hollis & Eastern” was chartered on October 15, 1958 when a group of Southwest Oklahoma businessmen Purchased the Katy’s Altus to Wellington branch as far as Hollis which was scheduled for abandonment. Operations during the line’s early years were marginal but the H&E soon received a major boost in traffic when Republic Gypsum announced plans to build a new sheetrock plant at Duke. After opening in September 1964, the new plant quickly became so dependent on the line that Republic soon purchased the H&E Outright in 1971. By 1975 the Duke portion in operation. Republic would later sell the Duke operation to American Gypsum in 1998 who then continued to operate the line until April 5, 2010 when the H&E was acquired by the Stillwater Central.… (plus d'informations)

First chartered in 1900, the Kansas City, Mexico & Orient Railroad, or more commonly known as the Orient, was constructed from Wichita, Kansas, south through Oklahoma & Texas, and eventually extended all the way into Mexico. After experiencing financial setbacks prior to completion, the U.S. portion of the KCM&O was acquired by the Santa Fe in 1928.

The Orient served a sparsely populated area and as a result it never achieved a mainline status in the Santa Fe system. Although it was served by one of the longest doodle bug assignments in the United States, after the discontinuance of passenger operations in 1959 the Orient settled down as a sleepy branch line with much of its traffic base centered around seasonal agriculture. Over the years the line was severed in several locations with its primary traffic base remaining between Clinton, OK (Farmrail now uses that part of the track from Clinton through Altus) and Sweetwater, TX. Prior to its sale in June 1991, I managed to make several trips along the line in the hopes of documenting the Orient’s final years as a Santa Fe branch line. Although much of the line has since been abandoned, join me now as we take on last nostalgic look at Santa Fe’s “Orient.” Running time: 51 min.… (plus d'informations)

Originally known as the Katy’s Northwestern Division and later as the Western Subdivision, the line’s primitive construction featured ties directly on the barren prairie. Its bucolic nature, coupled with an overnight boom in traffic during the annual wheat harvest each June provided an excellent visual commentary on the hard-economic conditions which plagued the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad during its final decades of existence.

Some of the Old Greer County areas featured in this Video are the MKT operations on the northern half of the Western Subdivision during 1988-1989 as well as nostalgic look back at earlier operations during the 1970’s. Motive power featured include GP-7’s, GP40’s and GP38’s. Some of the locations include Welon Yard & Altus. This video has a running time of 78 minutes.… (plus d'informations)
