Heerlijk vierde deel in de Woodville serie. Terug bij Faye en Bertie, Mrs. Teach en Miss Charlotte. Deze keer wordt het dorp aangevallen door the Holly King, een van de twee broers die afwisselend heersen over een half jaar. Maar the Holly King is boos. Hij is al eeuwen niet gezien en nu komt hij terug om te merken dat zijn woud is verdwenen en dat er nu een dorp in de plaats is gekomen. Dat kan hij niet tolereren en hij roept de bomen op om hun terrein terug te nemen. Daardoor wordt het dorp bedreigd. Het is aan Faye om dit op te lossen.… (plus d'informations)

Faye is a young girl living in Woodville, a village in Kent during the Battle of Britain. Her father owns the local pub and her mother died when Faye was little.
One day, strange things start to happen in Woodville, and they seem to have to do with the old book of her mother that Faye has found. The eerie Crow Folk are threatening the village and Faye feels like she might be the only one who realizes what is happening, and maybe even the one responsible for it.

I loved everything about this story: The characters, the setting, the magical elements. It is not overly creepy, more cosy with eerie elements, and the blending of fantasy and history are well done. There are elements of the British home front and the Battle of Britain, and the magic is there all the time, but Faye's situation, her feelings and the people around her are just as important.

Candida Gubbins is a wonderful narrator and I absolutely forgot that this was one person speaking - she is just so good and her narration is lively, yet authentic.

"The Crow Folk" just felt like a warm blanket sprinkled with a few goosebumps and a bit of excitement. It is not my usual type of story, which is why I am so happy that I found it through LT and this group. I will certainly continue with this series.… (plus d'informations)

This rocks along at a fair old lick and while I think it is intended at a YA audience it doesn't shy away from the darker side of human nature along the way. Into Faye's Kentish village arrive a family of German Jewish children, which allows an exploration of prejudice against Germans, and the horrors that the Jews were suffering at this early stage of the war. Into this comes the local landed gentry, and a tree of life that seems to be everyone's prize. Faye runs into everything, headlong, as usual, but she also has some moments of introspection that contrast nicely. The contrast between the war and the local is well balanced, and the village events are described with a sense of fun.
As a piece of escapist literature, it worked exactly as hoped. I enjoy these and will be looking out book 3.… (plus d'informations)

Wat een heerlijk boek is dit. Mr. Stay kan verdraaid goed schrijven. Dit boek vertelt het verhaal van de magiërs Kosheen Katell en Sander Bree. Sander werkt voor de koning en Kosheen werkt voor wie haar wil hebben als een waarheidsziener. Maar dat verandert allemaal als de Lapis Maan door een groot brok graniet dat uit de ruimte komt vallen vernietigd wordt. Opeens hebben ze niets meer over van hun magische krachten. Rosheen's broertje Oskar heeft de eerste jaren van zijn leven doorgebracht als een geestelijk gehandicapt kind, dat gepest wordt door iedereen, ze noemen hem het Maan kind. Maar door de vernietiging van de Lapis Maan komen zijn krachten juist tot leven.
Ondertussen begint er een oorlog tussen het rebellenleger van Haldor Frang en de koning van Bhaltair van Ultan.
Goed geschreven en intrigerend van het begin tot het einde. Ik vind het achteraf jammer dat ik het boek even aan de kant heb geschoven om andere boeken voor te laten gaan. Want dit is het absoluut waard om in een ruk uit te lezen.… (plus d'informations)
