5276. Sailor Man The Troubled Life and Times of J.P. Nunnally, USN, by Del Staecker (read 14 May 2015) This 147 page book tells of J. P. Nunnally, who was born, apparently, on Dec 22, 1927, in Alabama and who was able to enlist in the U. S. Navy when he was 16. He served on the U.S.S. This book begins with the hero, Jake Thompson, as a disgraced cop who made a mistake some years ago which resulted in the death of a female suspect and the critically wounding of his partner.

When we meet him, Jake is on his way into a life of bourbon, bad coffee, and guilt. However, his loyal band of admirers will not let him slide down the road to self-destruction.

Although blacklisted by his own department and the Chicago press, Jake slowly rebuilds his life and his reputation by solving a number of cases that no one else wants. In the process he proves that in fact he is one of the best detectives Chicago PD has.

It is a slow, painful process but in the end Jake Thompson proves that tenacity and being the best you can possibly be always pays off in the end.
