Natalia Sobrevilla Perea is Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at the University of Kent. She has published widely on the political, social, and intellectual history of Peru and the Andes and is currently leading a project to digitize nineteenth-century newspapers in regional archives in Peru, funded by afficher plus the British Library. The Andean region possesses a complex exceptionality that has brought both strife and cooperation throughout Peru and Bolivia’s histories up to the present. Natalia Sobrevilla-Perea’s The Caudillo of the Andes demonstrates this distinctiveness by illustrating the unique Andean interpretation of caudillismo and examining the interconnected nature of Peru and Bolivia that led to the formation of a brief Confederation. This is a sympathetic biography where Sobrevilla-Perea employs the life story of Andres de Santa Cruz to present these broader issues. At times, it proved difficult to follow all of the troop movements and battle details without already possessing a background in the history of this region. However, ultimately, this book was informative whether or not the reader has any previous knowledge of the Andean countries. Sobrevilla-Perea utilizes Santa Cruz’s biography to both illustrate his importance and depict in an accessible way the distinctive features of Peru and Bolivia, including their interpretation of Andean caudillismo, which tie them inextricably together while also causing tensions.… (plus d'informations)
