[from review "King Solomon's Portrait of Old Age by John Smith" by Trevor H. Howell, on Oxford Academic website]
John Smith was born in 1630. He went to Oxford University, getting his B.A. in 1651 and his M.D. in 1652. He became a 'Candidate' of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1659 and a Fellow in 1672. As was customary in those times, he became a deep student of the Authorized Version of the Bible. In the 12th chapter of Ecclesiastes, he found what he took to be an allegory of old age and its disabilities. After deep consideration, he wrote a book on this (described as 'curious' in the Dictionary of National Biography) which was published in 1666. Further editions followed in 1676 and 1752 (posthumous).
