Unfortunately this wasn't for me. I found the plot slow and contrived, and there was little to capture the imagination. I think the author was attempting to achieve a sense of whimsy, but the plot was so tedious that any idea of playfulness just got lost. I did not finish this book.

This is a fun book with a whimsical premise that touches on desire, survival and the importance of cake.

NOTE: I won a free eBook copy of this book in MOBI format from LibraryThing's Early Reviewers (February 2021).

When I ponder The Apocalypse, I rarely stop to think about what would happen to some of the secondary comforts of our daily lives. In reading Silleck's novel, I got a glimpse into the fate of cake and its devotees. Cake, like fine art and manicures, is portrayed as one of the markers of a society with limited strife. Pete, the protagonist, is a skilled amateur baker who pines for the halcyon days of pre-Apocalypse life and seeks the creation and consumption of cake even when he is stuck in survival mode.

Silleck's novel is one of adventure and survival that is humorous even in the most dire of situations. The portrayal of warring clans satirizes the social divisions of contemporary American society. Though the novel's pacing was excellent, I found the chapters involving Betty somewhat awkward: the connection between her and the Blue Clan was not explained in detail, and her involvement with Pete tainted the novel's conclusion. Still, I found "The End of Cake" a fun and entertaining read.

I really, really liked this. It's a good-hearted twist on apocalyptic fiction that weirdly leaves you feeling good about the collapse of society. What is life without cake? Pete the Baker strives to keep one little piece of humanity alive with his post-apocalyptic bakery, but of course fate has other plans. It's a buddy story, a trek through The Waste(land), contains true love, and has more than a little humor. Not deep, but very enjoyable.
