Anthropologically, I learned as much from the historical setting as from the Deaf. The author's family was poor (they couldn't afford a rug, yet had only a single parent working), and a childhood friend died of an illness. Also, people sleep on the roofs of their buildings when the summer nights are too hot.

Besides that, it was moving enough, in the expected ways.
