The Reckoning is the 2nd book in the Shelter series, and picks up where The Beginning ended. With threats from a hostile faction, it is time to take the fight to them. Jesse and Addy are at odds after Jesse hid who he really was from her.

This book was packed with action and hard to put down. I liked it even more than the first book! There was a sense of mystery as you wonder who in the group might not be on the same side, and romance too. The book ends with a cliffhanger, so I'll definitely be downloaded it to my kindle to see what happens next!… (plus d'informations)

“Oh, she was pretty enough, some might even say beautiful when she made the effort, with her thick, dark hair and pale skin with contrasting dark-blue eyes. She was tall and had a good body. She’d heard it all her life. The prettiest Sparrow girl, built like a brick shithouse. Not that it meant much in the end.”

While I love me some angst, I have a hard time taking a book seriously that bemoans the struggles of a gorgeous, waif-like woman. In U.S. society, a woman's appearance matters more than anything else about her. It's B.S., it's not right, but it is what it is. It's tough for me to feel sympathy for, much less relate to, a woman who has so much privilege when it comes to looks/body/physical appearance (even if her class background mirrors my own).

That said, of course I liked it because there was SO MUCH ANGST but after all the build-up, it felt kind of neatly resolved. But this kind of thing is right up my alley! (3.5 stars)

As much as I love a story with a falsely-accused heroine, I couldn't really get super into this. The hero kept referring to his misogynist father's teachings and his own mistrust of women, and it all felt conflated with the hero's dominance and relationship to BDSM. And I do love a good grovel, but this felt more like a campaign than anything else. Still, I'll check out more from this author.

Short but sweet angsty tale with an overheard insult and Big Misunderstanding as a result. Packs a decent wallop given it has so few pages! (3.5 stars)
