Ms Sanguinetti mixes her own letters and recollections with sections of her favourite books, poems, school reports and hymns to describe her joys and struggles as a country girl in a boarding school. She covers a wide range of topics from, fitting in (or not), making, keeping and losing friends, abominable boarding house food and secret midnight feasts, pranks, crushes, homesickness, lack of privacy, sexual awakening and discovering boys, not having a boyfriend, questions of faith, and of course, concerns about academic performance and becoming a small fish in a big pond.
