Joan Sanders, née Allred, was born in Three Forks, Montana. She graduated from Weber Junior College in 1944 and was a Henry Newell Scholar at Stanford University in 1946. She received her bachelor's degree cum laude from the University of Utah in 1947.

She became an instructor in English and creative writing at the University of Utah, Utah State University, Claremont College, and California Polytech University. In 1947, she married Raymond T. Sanders, with whom she had a son. After their divorce, she remarried and divorced again. Among her numerous books are The Nature of Witches (1963), Baneful Sorceries or the Countess Bewitched (1969), and the biography La Petite: The Life of Louise de la Valliere (1959).

Very entertaining novel about an arranged marriage, witchcraft, and murder in the time of the Louis, the Sun King, in France during the time of the Affair of the Poisons.

I've read this novel at least six or seven times; also recommended is one of the author's other books, The Marquis.
