At 17, Rigamonti won a national literacy prize for this book. His lovely, simple and colorful drawings lend themselves to this darling story of Pesky the pig who led his friends (the 16 other pigs!) on a journey to town, a fair and then to a cave. It was in the cave that they were confronted by a giant bear. The farmer, coming to the rescue, saved the pigs. Pesky admits his wrongs, helping everyone to lean from his scary mistake. This book could fit nicely into lessons on farming, vocab building and safety/ honesty. Along with the great story, the story rhymes as it goes along with great rhythm. Animal sounds scatter the story and there are 10+ level two words. I would recommend this story for the end of kinder into the first grade.
