This is an interesting look at the mind-body connection with illnesses, particularly illnesses that the author describes as functional ailments, things that the doctors have problems dealing with, that can't be dealt with by a few tablets but need more work. These are complicated and complex illnesses and need more than the few allocated minutes that a doctor often has to deal with them. This is where, often, alternative medicine makes people feel better, they have the undivided attention of the practitioner for longer, they can discuss issues and point out more holistic issues, and this is where modern scientific medicine fails, it's too reductionist and fails to see the person as a unit, rather than a collection of parts.
