The Grail Psalms were translated directly from the Hebrew, paying particular attention to literary fidelity and the rhythmic "song" structure of the poetry. They were sanctioned for use in the Roman Catholic Church in 1960 and the first edition of them appeared in 1963. The Psalms have endured for centuries, giving expression to human need, anguish, love, praise and thanksgiving. In this translation many previously obscure passages have been clarified and the intention of the original made clear. This is the new inclusive language version following the advice of the 1990 National Conference of Catholic Bishops in the USA. It avoids gender-specific pronouns where possible and omits masculine pronouns for God
