Wilhelm Pruller

The English-language reader rarely reads about World War II from the German point of view, so this was a rarely-seen window into what life was like for the Wehrmacht. I was struck by two things: one being that Pruller was such an ardent Nazi and never changed his opinions even when defeat was staring him in the face, and two being that, Nazi-ness aside, he sounded like any other soldier. As the book's afterword pointed out, he could have been American or Soviet or French or whatever nationality you chose, and he would have sounded just the same.

I'm not sure how well this book stands as a historical document and I certainly can't recommend it for pleasure. But people who want to know what military was like from the other side ought to think about taking a look.… (plus d'informations)
