Fonthill is another of those British publishers that is as likely to come out with a pot-boiler as a winner, but this is definitely a winner, and is probably the definitive book to date on the history of this racing championship, and the aircraft that were used to contest it. I do find it interesting that, despite being fascinated with these aircraft since he was a child, Pegram has to conclude that the technological benefits of these racing machines have been somewhat oversold.

Enjoyable And Fills in Gaps

First the negative,
1. This is the cheapest quality "hardcover" I have ever seen. It was received damaged. (Dented on the bottom.)
2. I am not enamored with the trend towards watermarking the background on some pages.
This is an excellent book as it fills in the gaps that are usually missing in the more classic tomes that are available on Supermarine aircraft and/or the Spitfire. Aside from editorializing from a perspective 80 years after the death of RJ Mitchell the author does a great job of fleshing out the history of the man and Supermarine. The color illustrations are enjoyable and the rest of the book is reasonably well illustrated with 3 views and a few photographs interspersed throughout the text.

Highly recommended.

When combined with the Putnam book on Supermarine Aircraft you will have an excellent 2 volume library more than sufficient for the non-modeling aviation enthusiast.

This is probably the seminal single volume history of the Schneider Cup. However, I have two criticisms with this volume. Not enough photographs of the airframes and engines and I would have liked more text on engine development.
Other than that? This is undoubtedly the seminal single volume history of the Schneider Cup. Each year gets coverage of the aircraft, personalities and circumstances that drove the developments for that year. Each chapter includes obligatory information about the race course, weather, and controversies that may have arose as well. There are plenty of three views of the both the built and the proposed airframes as well. The only possible companion volume to this book might be "Race with the Wind: How Air Racing Advanced Aviation" by Birch Matthews for information on the technical side.

This is not a "quick read" book. It's in-depth and aggressive in scope. Recommended without hesitation for anyone with an interest in in the golden age of air-racing or aircraft developments. Modelers would be well advised to look else where.
