- Hortensia Bengescu was the daughter of General Dimitrie Bengescu and his wife Zoe Stefǎnescu. She attended high school in Bucharest. At aged 20, she married the magistrate Nicolae Papadat and became known as Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu. Her literary career took time to develop because her husband was transferred from town to town, leaving Hortensia to run the household and care for their four children. She became particularly known for her in-depth concentration on the details of everyday urban life. Her sharp portrayals of mental aberrations also are considered unusually powerful. Her best known work was probably Drumul ascuns "(Hidden Road"), published in 1933.
