"PROFIT means gain from a given transaction."[1] Its quest is the chief motive of commerce, its impetus for growth, but "profit-seeking has never been the only determinant of the development of Western society". It runs parallel to such impulses as religious or moral principle, tenderness toward the helpless, pulling on the lines of justice, and helping the needy. "If income is employed solely to further a moral or ethical purpose, the enterprise qualifies for non-profit status." [2]
