Courte biographie
Gordon Ogilvie, (1934-2017) was a New Zealand historian and biographer who wrote more than 20 books, mainly about the people, places and institutions of the Canterbury region. He played a considerable role in uncovering and popularising the exploits of pioneer aviator Richard Pearse via his 1973 work, The Riddle of Richard Pearse. His other major biography, Denis Glover: His Life (1999), was the first full account of that significant figure in New Zealand literature.

Superb literary biography. Combines the literary life and Glover's personal life so well that the reader is fully informed as the biography progresses. Poor Glover was pulled so many ways by deep emotions, some of which he couldn't and wouldn't publicly acknowledge. We are much the richer country for his "versifying", as he liked to call poetry, along with his printing skills, public rambunctiousness, D-Day gallantry and prodigious drinking. And if anyone can quote a New Zealand poem, it's likely to be his "The Magpies".

Wonderful book.

A very engaging history of a fascinating character. I particularly enjoyed the tales of Pearse's improvisatory originality (make a propellor from the sheep dip tank or use golden syrup cans for a lightweight metal screen).
