Especially the entries by Vidler and Neumann are fascinating and have not only value for understanding stagesets of movies but also the way we experience space with our experience of movies.
The selected films are too few and perhaps also a little bit random and high and low brow mixed.

A lushly-illustrated exhibit catalog with high-quality images including film stills, set photos, and original sketches. The movies range from the classic (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari; Metropolis; Batman) to the obscure (Aelita, Queen of Mars; Just Imagine; The Golem). There are a couple general essays at the beginning and anywhere from 3-10 pages devoted to each film. The focus is on set design and its relationship to architectural movements contemporaneous to the films. I bought this for a college course with the author, and the contents were vastly enlivened by his humorous, charming classroom performance. I've seen all the movies featured and think it's a great book, if likely to be limited in its appeal. Recommended for architecture/film buffs/scholars.
