- Dorina Lockhart Clifton was taken to Turkey as a child by her father, who was in the consular service in Constantinople (now Istanbul). The family lived in one of the beautiful "water mansions" on the shores of the Bosphorus. She left Turkey in 1907 and the following year married Sir Thomas Lewis Hughes Neave, a baronet; the couple had four children. When the future Prime Minister Anthony Eden opened Turkish House in London to foster Anglo-Turkish relations, Lady Neave organized regular social activities at which British, American, and Turkish civilians, politicians, and members of the diplomatic corps and armed forces could meet. She wrote three books about her experiences in Turkey. Lady Neave was also an enthusiastic gardener, and a breed of rose called Dorina Neave is named for her.
